Saving money will always be a popular topic. We can all use more of it and we all need to save more money. However, we tend to underrate the importance of saving time. We can’t store it away for a rainy day, but it will give us more “time” to work on projects we care about, reduce our stress level, and have more time to actually make more impact and income. Let me tell you how I saved 199 hours a month from speaking.
I was working as the Director of Youth Services in the Detroit Mayor’s Office. My duties were to make sure that over 5,000 youth had summer jobs, be the Mayor’s Office Liaison for President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” (MBK) initiative, and start an elementary soccer league. After long hours, collaborations, and multiple streams of funding, we did it. There was over 7 million dollars and 5,600 young people with jobs! Now the new mission was to do 8,000 jobs, continue with MBK, soccer, and my personal project with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Did you catch the last part? My personal project with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Ya see, I believe that kids need jobs, should play soccer, and I definitely believe President Barack Obama’s initiative is vital! I just have this thing about mentorship that tugs at my heart. It’s the fast track to success and the catalyst for better youth outcomes! All Facts!
I absolutely loved my role and the impact and experience that came with it. Being transparent, I made $101k annually from my position. After taxes that would give me about $5200 a month. I worked the traditional 40 hours per week, but of course I put in an extra 10 hours per week to take things to the next level. That means 50 hours per week and averaging 200 hours per month for the job. Some months needed more hours! Some call it a blessings, some call it a sacrifice, I simply enjoyed it:)
Interestingly enough, at the time I could speak for an hour for $5,000 as a speaker. Right! You do the math. For 1 hour I was paid the same that I would get for working 200+ hours. In a nutshell, I can speak for 1 hour a month and save 199 hours a month. This also means that I would be speaking about topics that I cared about the most. That also means that I can have more time to impact the world the way I want to impact the world. Hmmmm… I still had to actually get everything together to be ready to pitch myself as a professional speaker. Lets just say I absolutely figured it out.
Then there is the concept of continuously adding value, enhancing your brand, creating more impact, establishing more influence, and increasing your price over time because of all the fore mentioned concepts. That’s another blog post.
Your wheels must be churning right now. Do you have a story, message, or expertise? Do you want to speak about the issues of life that are most important to you? Do you have solutions for some of these issues? Do you know your niche?
