So you’ve been asked to speak a few times. People obviously respect your craft because they asked you to speak and you didn’t even pitch yourself. Of course you’ll do it! But there is only one problem here… How much should you charge?
This has to be one of the top questions that I’m asked from people who have just started speaking. What the heck should I charge as a speaker? When should I increase my speaking investment charge? Where is the manual?
Ehhhh… Good luck finding that. You’ll find random material all over the web speaking about the subject matter. This is what a couple speaker mentors told me.
Speaker Mentor #1: Never charge below $2000.
Speaker Mentor #2: I had a best-selling book and I and was requested to speak. I never charged for a speech/talk, but I promise it was on my mind of things to do (scratches head). I told them $25,000 and they said, “Ummmm… That’s outside of our budget. We can do $20,000.” Before they could get out $20,0…. I said, “Absolutely, I will do it for $20k! I’m a little disappointed you don’t have $25k in the budget, but we are set for $20k.”
LOL! I was on the floor when Mentor #2 said he responded so quickly. He has been charging $20k ever since. Whew! That’s a heck of a way to start an asking price.
Here’s a 5-piece of advice from me to you:
- Think about a range rather than a fixed price.
- Be flexible with different type of organizations. Consider having a non-profit price vs. a corporate price.
- Start higher than your asking price. You can always negotiate down.
- You need someone negotiating prices on your behalf (agent, manager, team member, etc.).
- You need a contract.
A couple questions to ask yourself:
- How much value am I adding to the audience?
- Will the audience life be different after hearing from me?
If you take these questions serious you can ask for a solid speaker investment charge.
