Building a business and brand from the ground up is far from easy, trust me! There will be times when business is booming and other times when you may ask yourself “What the hell did I get myself into?” The key to becoming a successful entrepreneur is learning how to maintain your focus, enthusiasm, and drive even when the circumstances are less than desirable.
Staying motivated is a challenge that all entrepreneurs must tackle each and every day. The reality is that the process of building a business is hardly glamorous. It can be physically and emotionally draining. Do you ever feel this way? Be honest with yourself. Do you?
For anyone that answered “Yes”, here are 5 quick tips you can put to use immediately to help charge your batteries to keep charging forward.
Try a change of scenery.
My home office was becoming dreadful… I loved it once upon a time, but now my yellow lamp light was too bright for my eyes and wasn’t the best lighting for going LIVE. My desk space was cluttered and I was between working at my home office or my coach which is a fusion between too comfortable and plain uncomfortable. One minute I was falling asleep and the next minute readjusting 10 times a minute. I could always leave and go to WeWork, but sometimes I simply enjoy the concept of working from home. Something had to change…
Last week I purchased new office furniture! Oh yeah! I picked up a new desk, bookshelf, LED-light lamp, and a cozy black-leather and chrome chair. Placement is extremely important so I placed it between the city and the river view windows. I’m ready to work.
That may seem like a lot, but changing the scenery can be even simpler than spending one dime… Go on a day trip, visit with friendtors, or family you haven’t seen in awhile. Try taking your office mobile and do your work in a new place. A change in your environment can improve your mood and help get your creative juices flowing when you’re having trouble getting motivated.
Rely on your “Why”
Building an empire is no walk in the park. When you’re feeling frustrated or discouraged it helps to go back to your “Why” and remind yourself what is at stake. Remember what you have to gain by pushing forward. I personally have several “Whys” that help me regain my focus and keep me motivated.
- My siblings, nieces, and nephews
- My mentees that look to me for advice
- My future family
- My desire to be an agent of change
- My desire to live the life that I deserve
What is your why or whys? Revisit the original reasons why you set out on this journey in the first place to renew your enthusiasm. This works almost every time!
When things aren’t going as planned we tend to focus more on our perceived failures rather than celebrate how many victories we’ve had along the way. Learn to reward yourself regularly for the progress that you are making. You’re doing your best and trying your hardest. Give yourself some credit and celebrate your growth. You deserve to see yourself as a winner.
Set New Goals.
Setting your sights on a new goal or project is a great way to be productive while distracting yourself from your entrepreneurial woes. Brainstorm a few projects that you can start working on and put your energy into. Starting a new goal or project can boost your self-confidence and help you find the motivation you need to tackle other areas of your life. Be careful not to start a completely new project. Keep it in your wheelhouse of expertise.
Take A Break.
Turn off the cellphone, shut off the computer, and really unplug, even for just a few hours. Self-care is EXTREMELY important for your mental, physical, and emotional health. Taking a break gives us an opportunity to get some much needed rest, refreshes us, and prepares us to go in even harder on our goals.
As an entrepreneur you are taking a risk that so many others didn’t have the guts to take. Even if you are focused on a side hustle, you’re taking positive actions towards your dreams. You’re unique! It’s natural to lose a little steam along the way, but you must fight every day to stay motivated — your dream depends on it! Entrepreneurship is tough but the payoff is amazing! This week, try putting these tips to use when you feel you’re motivation levels getting a little low. LET’S GET MOTIVATED!
